While we all know it isn’t good for us, a large majority eats a lot of greasy food. While we’re not going to speak of what food like that can do to your arteries, we will speak of what it does to another type of system – your plumbing.

Grease clogs are among the worst things that can happen to your plumbing. Congealed fat can create a water-repelling clog that can be very stubborn. When you finish frying bacon and other fatty foods there will usually be a layer of grease left over in the pot. While it might seem like it is quite liquidy and should wash down the drain easily, this is not the case. Instead, the grease will congeal as soon as it hits the cold water in your p-trap.

So, what is the solution? The easy answer is to avoid pouring grease down your drain. Whenever you have grease sitting in a pan, you can either just leave it to cool down in the pan and scrape it out in the garbage later. You could also pour it into a container to throw out or even use it for frying later.
