One thing that most homeowners hate is strange noises. No, it’s not because they are afraid of the dark, but usually, a new noise means a new expense. Take for example when you start hearing a loud thud whenever you turn off the faucet. This can be quite disconcerting, and it should be because this is a potentially serious problem.

The noise you hear is most likely because of something called a water hammer.

It is a condition that is caused when the water in your pipes can’t find anywhere to go when you turn off the faucet, so it bangs against the walls of the pipes instead. This could eventually damage your pipes, so you should take care of the issue as soon as possible.

There is something called an air chamber that is supposed to prevent this situation from happening, but if the air chamber is filled up with water, it will no longer function properly. Fortunately, you should be able to fix this problem yourself. If you open up all your faucets in the home and turn off the main water supply, the water in the air chamber should drain out, and it would function once again. If this doesn’t help, you might need to call a plumber.
