Often a home is designed with an aesthetic in mind, and to conform to that aesthetic, many custom-built stairways become dangerous. While those who live in the home and use them every day may become comfortable with the stairs, visitors and especially the Elderly may find using some stairs uncomfortable. Some railings, while beautiful to look at, don’t actually offer the safe and dependable grip needed.
The prime function of the handrail is for holding as support. So a person must be able to properly grasp the handrail quickly, easily, and firmly if you should start losing your balance. Some may need to use the handrail to steady themselves the entire way up or down the steps. For this reason, should be able to run your hand smoothly along the entire length without having to adjust your grip. And for truly safe stairs, make sure to keep only very small gaps in the guards to prevent the risk of younger children falling through.
