Many times on a home inspection I will point out that the client has a 200 amp electrical service and they will ask “is that enough?”. The short answer to that is: Very likely yes.

The average family of 4 will almost never exceed 60 amps of usage at peak usage times. Also, 200 amps is not a standard as many people think – it is actually a maximum for most residential services.

So unless you have a specialty use of your home – such as a welding shop, lots of heavy electrical/construction equipment, or computer servers supporting a large business – then very likely 200 amps is enough for you and your family.
